Qatar has emerged as one of the world's most important oil and gas producing countries and is home to the wealthiest population in the world (GDP per capita in 2016: 118,215 USD). With a total population of over 2.6 million inhabitants, the country is also home to the fastest growing population in the world, expanding by a staggering 40% over 2011-2016. Doha, its capital city, is a powerhouse of the country's economy as, in 2016, it contributed 68% of the country's GDP.
